J Dawg Sauce - A Copycat Recipe

Now I am not a hot dog fan
so it took some convincing to
get me to try the local
J Dawg that serves
only beef hot dogs and Polish dogs
but they really were fantastic.

Hubby wants their sauce on
everything and although they
will sell their sauce to you,
I had to come home and try
to come up with a copycat
recipe.

A little taste testing and a
little intuition and I think
I nailed it!

It is three simple ingredients
ketchup and mustard,
of course,
and brown sugar,
lots and lots of it!

J Dawg Sauce Copycat Recipe

3 C. brown sugar, packed
1 C. ketchup
1/3-1/2 C. yellow mustard
(I like the 1/2 C.)

Mix all three ingredients together
in a sauce pan and bring to a boil.

Turn down the heat and heat through
until the sugar is dissolved.

If necessary run through a sieve to
remove any lumps.

Let cool and serve on hot dogs,
Polish dogs, and anything else
your little tastebuds crave.  Hubby
loves to put it on pizzas as his sauce
and just about anything else he
might be dipping!

It has just that perfect punch
of sweet and sour and really compliments
the dogs.  I like mine with jalapenos
and pepperoncinis - gives the dog a
little kick!  They also serve it with
a huge pickle slice.

Yup, even a non-dog lover can love these!

Chocolat - French for Chocolate. I adored chocolate from a young age when I had to sneak in the cupboard to find where my mother had hidden the Nestle's Chocolate Chips. Having read about the famous chocolat shoppes in Paris, when I finally got there I was determined to try a chocolate from every Paris shoppe. I invite you to share my adventures in creating, in travel, and in life.

  2. Good Afternoon Jacqueline, Wow, I will have one happy husband when I make your hot dog sauce. Living in England I have not heard of J. Dawg sauce, but it certainly sounds right up my husband's street.
Can I ask, the yellow mustard you use, is it a hot mustard, as our yellow English mustard is very hot.
Once I know the type of mustard to use, I am going to surprise my husband this weekend as he loves hot dogs on a Saturday.
    Best Wishes

  4. Hi Jackie. I must admit...I LOVE HOTDOGS, especially J Dawgs all beef dogs. Not very high brow, I know but what can I say? I do think you nailed the sauce. Hope your summer is going well.

  5. I like coming up with my own version too.
It is always healthier and much less expensive too.
    Sounds delicious.

  8. We don't have J Dawg but we do have Dr. Dawg. I'll bet my grandsons would love this sauce on their hot dogs. I buy the no-nitrite, uncured all beef dogs for them to try to make it a little healthier for them :)

  10. I'm in your boat and you should see the looks I get when I order a chili dog, hold the dog. Almost the same as a Sloppy Joe right? Your sauce recipe sounds delicious. :)
