Ribbon Cake

There are lots of birthdays to celebrate in March
at
Purple Chocolat Home!
What better way to celebrate than a purple cake?

Actually, I have only made a couple of purple cakes
in my life.  My very first was when I was about 10 years
old and what was to be a two layer cake turned out about
1 1/2 inches tall and what was to be purple frosting was
a yucky brownish muck.  Wish I had a picture of that cake
to show people you can be a total failure on your first try!

My daugher in law Lindsay had made a ribbon cake
for her daughter's first birthday last July so we wanted
her to teach us how to do it.  There are plenty of tutorials
on the internet.  She had watched one and learned how.

Since we were celebrating at our family Sunday dinner
I called everyone and told them that I was making
the cake and Lindsay would teach us if they wanted
to come 30 minutes early.

I had the cake crumb coated and we made a wonderful
frosting using cream.  Everyone had a hand in it so it
had a little more variety than it would have but it was
fun giving it a try.  It is important to keep the #150 tip
straight up and down and touch the side of the cake and
the preceeding ribbon.  If you start going crooked, just
scrape it off and try again (we did a lot of that!)

We laughed a lot and had fun giving it a try and in the end,
the finished product was beautiful and delicious.

Cream Frosting Recipe
(I used about 2 1/2 recipes for the ribbons)

1/2 C. soft butter
4 C. powdered sugar
1 tsp. almond flavoring
enough cream to make a fairly stiff frosting, but
soft enough to pipe
color

Place the butter, sugar and flavor in a large mixing bowl
and add enough cream to make a stiff frosting.  The frosting
will get soft as you pipe it out.  We kept it in the fridge and
filled the bag several times as when it gets too soft, the ribbons
won't hold their shape.

We love to save some sparklers and put one on top
of birthday cakes.

Happy Birthday to any other
March birthdays.  I think it is one of the best
months of the year to have a birthday!
Some of the photos were taken by my niece
Gabby who got a new Canon Rebel for Christmas!

  14. My piping skills are so awful and I hate to think what I could do with a pastry bag full of frosting! I love your purple cake, Jacqueline, and know you had a very fun time decorating it. Don't think I've ever seen a purple cake before.

  19. Wow Jacqueline. First of all, this is my colour and, I did get a cake with some purple frosting for my birthday in February but not as elegant as yours.
I'm starting a cake decorating course next month but the ribbons will be beyond my capabilities for awhile.
The instructor has indicated we'll be using crisco (blue box) for our icing and not butter. I don't know what to think of this - any comments?
