Red Velvet Cake, a southern specialty!
This one is included in our family favorites cookbook.
If you are going to write up a family recipe book,
don't include poisonous recipes just ask
Teeny Templeton.
Michael Lee West sent me a copy of her latest
book, Gone With A Handsomer Man.
I told her I would blog my
Award Winning Red Velvet Cake
in honor of Teeny Templeton who loves to cook
but whose Templeton Family Receipts get her
into trouble because they tend toward the
lethal side.
I have to warn you, this book is pretty "spicy".
It will also make you very, very hungry
(remember she is a pastry chef!)
The Red Velvet Cake will make you hungry too.
(Not for dieters!)
This family recipe came from
Grandma Eunice.
My husband's favorite cake was Grandma's Red Velvet
Cake. His mother went through the phase that red
food coloring was like poison
(just like the Templeton Family Receipts),
so when his mother
would stop at Grandma's house and Grandma would
send my hubby his favorite red velvet cake (of which she always kept
some unfrosted cake layers frozen, ready in case one of her
grandchildren stopped by), she would toss it in the trash
before it ever got to our house. (Or so family legend says!)
Teeny's not the only one with unique relatives!
At a family reunion a few years ago, my husband's siblings
decided to have a bakeoff to see who could make
Grandma Eunice's red velvet cake the best.
This is the award winning recipe made by Uncle Greg
(he beat out the women.)
Teeny says,
"In the middle of the book, I found a recipe for red velvet cake
that called for vinegar, cocoa, buttermilk, and a whole
bottle of red food coloring. Aunt Bluette had written
in the upper corner, dense and moist, the best cake
you'll ever put in your mouth...."
This award winning cake fits the bill, although
I have to say, I tweek it with a marshmallow cream
frosting rather than cream cheese. Try it, you
will agree, it is award winning.
I will be posting this with
(Michael Lee West's amazing weekly food party)
That looks really delicious. Thanks for sharing your family recipe.

I've made Red Velvet cakes before with recipes close to this one but when you posted this before I tried it and it was amazing. You also inspired our youngest daughter with your white chocolate trees. Such a stunning presentation. I love the back story.
ReplyDeleteRed Velvet Cake is my favorite. Uncle Greg's looks really great with the three layers. Glad to have found your blog and I'm a new follower.

Another winner for me to sample!!! "YUMMMMY"... I LOVE recipes and cookbooks that have little notes in them. They are the ones I ALWAYS seek out, hehe...I wonder if someday someone will want mine(It's a MESS with little notes and stains,hehe)...This book looks like fun! and you made it look delicious! NOW to the printer to "Print out your red velvet cake"! Oh and I LOVE the idea of the marshmallow frosting instead of cream cheese frosting...Happy Easter to you and yours,
ReplyDeleteBig Hugs,
Donna
That looks delicious! I have to admit I was fearful the first time I made RV cake, that is a lot of red dye! I don't think I would let the gkids have it, but that leaves more for us!
ReplyDeleteYour cake looks fabulous! I don't have any family "receipts" with a RV cake, we Yankees only started having it available the last few years!
Happy Easter, J!
Red velvet cake with marshmallow frosting sounds DIVINE. I'm going to make RV cake for our Fourth of July celebration. I'll have to add something blue to it ;o) Happy Easter to you and yours.

ReplyDeleteOh my heavens, that looks too beautiful to eat! Loved hearing about your family and that would have killed me knowing the cake went in the trash...I might have gone dumpster diving for it! I'm loving Gone With A Handsomer Man, can't lay it down!
ReplyDeleteThis is so tall and beautiful. I love the shade of red with a touch of rose. It's just amazing. Thanks for sharing the infamous recipe!
