Halloween Apron Tutorial & A CSN Giveaway

Don't you just love all of the fun fabrics that they

have at stores?  I always wondered what to do

with them until I started making these cute ruffled

aprons which are all the rage around here.

I started making these a couple of years ago and

have probably made 30 of them for myself, family,

friends and gifts.

Start by tracing a butcher's style apron onto muslin for your

pattern.  I like mine to go just about to my knee.

This takes about 3/4 of a yard.  I often get 1 yard so I can

cut one of the ruffles from my main fabric.

Measure the widest part of the apron from hip to hip, then double

that measurement and cut 5 strips of coordinating fabric

that are 4 1/2 inches apiece.  So mine was 22 inches at

the hip or where I will attach the ties, so I cut my fabric

strips 4 1/2 x 44 inches.

Measure the top of the bib of the apron and cut 2 - 2 inch

strips that are double that measurement for the top two

ruffles.  Sometimes I only put on one ruffle. 

Serge the edges of all of your strips and your apron.

Turn over 3/8 inch and press all the way around

your apron.  Top stitch this in place.

I serge everything at once, then topstitch, then run

a gathering stitch on all of my ruffles.  Finally I

mark my stitching lines on the front of the apron

with a pen or in this case a pencil as my background

was black so that my ruffles go on straight.  Pin

the ruffles in place one at a time, adjusting the

gathering and placing them on top of the line

you have drawn.  I start with the top ruffle and

go down the garment.  You want the ruffles placed

4 inches apart so that they slightly overlap

each other.

Finish each corner with a little Fray Check so

that your serging doesn't unravel.

Sew ties for the neckline and the waistline by

cutting out pieces of coordinating fabric

that are 3 or 4 inches wide by at least

22 inches for the waist, shorter for the neck-

about 15 inches each..

Sew right sides together, turn and press.  Serge

the end and then attach to the apron.  Sometimes

I just do a loop for the neckline, then I make it

23 inches long by 3 or 4 inches wide.  Check

to see if this works length wise for the person

you are making the apron for.

I have made them in vintage fabrics,

Christmas fabrics, Valentines fabrics

and any number of combinations.

Of course my favorite is in purple fabrics.

These are easy enough for most

beginning/intermediate sewers.
